Learn from one of Britain's most decorated grapplers.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art: no striking, no kicks. It teaches you to control and submit opponents of any size using technique rather than strength. It's one of the most effective forms of self-defence, and one of the best workouts you'll ever do.
Costello BJJ is Exeter's home for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Led by Luke Costello, a multi-time European Champion, Abu Dhabi World Pro Champion, and ADCC veteran, our classes are open to complete beginners and experienced grapplers alike.
We focus on solid fundamentals, safe training, and building a community of people who genuinely enjoy showing up to train. Whether your goal is fitness, self-defence, or competition, you'll find a supportive environment and instruction you won't get anywhere else in the South West.

Full bio & competition recordCommon questions
Do I need any experience to start?
Not at all. Most people who walk through our door have never done any martial arts before. Our classes are structured so beginners can learn safely alongside more experienced students.
What should I wear to my first class?
Shorts and a t-shirt are fine. No special gear needed. If you stick with it you'll eventually want a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform), but there's no rush. We can advise you when the time comes.
Is BJJ safe? Will I get hurt?
BJJ is one of the safest martial arts because there's no striking. You train at your own pace and tap out of any position you're uncomfortable with. We prioritise safe, controlled training.
How much does it cost?
Your first class is completely free. After that, we offer monthly memberships. Get in touch for current pricing.
How often should I train?
Two to three times a week is ideal, but even once a week is a great start. Consistency matters more than frequency.
What's the difference between gi and no-gi?
Gi training uses a traditional uniform (jacket and trousers) that you grip and use as part of your technique. No-gi is done in shorts and a rash guard, with faster-paced grappling. Both are valuable and we'll introduce you to both.
What age do you need to be?
Our main classes are for adults (16+). Get in touch if you're interested in training for younger age groups.
