About BJJ

Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts

When people search for martial arts classes in Exeter, they're often comparing options: karate, taekwondo, kickboxing, MMA, judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Here's what makes BJJ different, and why it's become one of the fastest-growing martial arts worldwide.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on ground fighting, control, and submissions. Unlike striking martial arts (karate, taekwondo, boxing), BJJ teaches you to control and submit opponents using technique rather than strength or striking power.

The core principle: leverage over strength. A smaller, weaker person can defend against or submit a larger, stronger opponent by using proper technique, positioning, and leverage. This makes BJJ one of the most practical martial arts for real-world self-defence.

How BJJ compares to other martial arts

Striking arts (karate, taekwondo, boxing): Teach punches, kicks, and strikes. Great for fitness and discipline, but require athleticism and can be risky to train full-contact. BJJ focuses on control and submissions, making it safer to train at full intensity.

Judo: BJJ's closest relative. Judo emphasizes throws and takedowns; BJJ focuses on ground fighting after the takedown. Many high-level BJJ practitioners (including our head coach Luke Costello, a judo black belt) train both.

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts): Combines striking, wrestling, and BJJ. BJJ is a foundational component of MMA. Most UFC champions have strong BJJ backgrounds. If you're interested in MMA, BJJ is an excellent starting point.

Why choose BJJ as your martial art?

  • Effective self-defence: Most real-world altercations end up on the ground. BJJ teaches you exactly what to do there.
  • Safe to train: Unlike striking, you can spar ("roll") at 100% intensity without significant injury risk. This means faster learning.
  • Physical and mental benefits: Full-body workout, problem-solving under pressure, stress relief, and confidence building.
  • All ages and sizes: Because technique beats strength, BJJ works for anyone, regardless of size, age, or athleticism.
  • Proven effectiveness: BJJ revolutionized martial arts when Royce Gracie won early UFC tournaments using pure BJJ against larger strikers.

FAQ

Common questions

How is BJJ different from other martial arts?

BJJ is a grappling-based martial art — no punching or kicking. It focuses on control, leverage, and submissions. Unlike striking arts, you can spar at full intensity safely, which means faster learning and practical skill development.

Do I need any experience to start?

Not at all. Most people who walk through our door have never done any martial arts before. Our classes are structured so beginners can learn safely alongside more experienced students.

Is BJJ good for self-defence?

It's one of the most effective martial arts for real-world self-defence. Most altercations end up on the ground, which is exactly where BJJ specialises. You learn to control and neutralise threats without striking.

I've trained other martial arts. Will BJJ complement that?

Absolutely. BJJ fills the grappling gap that most striking arts leave open. Many of our students have backgrounds in boxing, karate, or kickboxing. Adding BJJ makes you a more complete martial artist.

How much does it cost?

Your first class is completely free. After that, we offer monthly memberships. Get in touch for current pricing.

How often should I train?

Two to three times a week is ideal, but even once a week is a great start. Consistency matters more than frequency.
