Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective self-defence

If you're searching for self defence classes in Exeter, you want something that actually works when it matters. Not choreographed moves or theoretical techniques, but real, practical skills you can rely on.

That's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The problem with traditional self-defence classes

Many self-defence courses teach pre-arranged scenarios: "If someone grabs you like this, do this." The problem? Real confrontations are unpredictable, chaotic, and don't follow scripts. Without live resistance training, you won't know if techniques actually work until it's too late.

BJJ is different. You train against fully resisting opponents every class. You learn what works under pressure because you're testing it constantly. This is why BJJ has become the foundation of MMA, law enforcement defensive tactics, and military combatives programs worldwide.

Why BJJ works for self-defence

Most fights go to the ground. Real-world altercations often end up on the ground, exactly where BJJ specializes. While strikers struggle with grappling, BJJ practitioners are in their element. This is why law enforcement and military personnel worldwide train BJJ as their primary combatives system.

Control without striking. BJJ teaches you to control and neutralize threats without throwing punches. This is critical for real-world scenarios where you want to de-escalate, not escalate. You can restrain someone without causing serious harm, which is important both legally and morally.

Leverage beats strength. BJJ is built on the principle that a smaller, weaker person can defend against a larger, stronger attacker using proper technique and leverage. This makes it uniquely effective for people of all sizes and athleticism levels.

Pressure-tested. Every technique you learn in BJJ has been tested thousands of times in live sparring and competition at the highest levels. Nothing is theoretical. If it works against a trained black belt trying to submit you, it'll work in a real situation.

What you'll learn in our self-defence classes

  • Escapes and defence: How to escape pins, headlocks, chokes, and common positions of disadvantage
  • Control and positioning: How to control an opponent from dominant positions (mount, side control, back control)
  • Submissions: Chokes and joint locks to neutralize threats when necessary
  • Takedown defence: How to stay on your feet or safely take the fight to the ground on your terms
  • Situational awareness: Understanding distance, timing, and when/how to engage or disengage
  • Live sparring: Testing your skills against resisting partners to build real competence and confidence

Learn from a proven competitor

Head coach Luke Costello is an IBJJF World Champion, 4x European Champion, and ADCC World Championship competitor. These credentials prove his techniques work at the absolute highest levels of competition. He's also a black belt under Hall of Famer Braulio Estima and holds a judo black belt.

When you train at Costello BJJ, you're learning from someone who's tested these techniques against the best in the world. Not theory. Not choreography. Real, battle-tested self-defence.

It's not just about fighting

While BJJ is incredibly effective for self-defence, most students never use it in a real altercation, and that's a good thing. What they do get:

  • Confidence: Knowing you can handle yourself changes how you carry yourself and how others perceive you
  • Fitness: BJJ is one of the most demanding full-body workouts you can do
  • Stress relief: Sparring is intense, focused, and meditative. It clears your mind like nothing else
  • Community: Train alongside supportive people who challenge and encourage you

FAQ

Common questions

Is BJJ really effective for self-defence?

It's one of the most proven martial arts for real-world self-defence. Most altercations end up on the ground, which is exactly where BJJ specialises. You learn to control and neutralise threats using leverage rather than strength.

How is this different from a weekend self-defence course?

Weekend courses teach pre-arranged scenarios. BJJ trains you against fully resisting opponents every session. You build real skills through repetition and live sparring, not choreographed moves.

Do I need to be strong or fit?

No. BJJ is built on the principle that a smaller, weaker person can defend against a larger, stronger attacker using technique and leverage. You get fit through training, and your technique will always be more important than your strength.

Will I have to fight or spar?

Live sparring is optional for beginners. You'll start with technique drilling and progress to controlled sparring at your own pace. Nobody is thrown in at the deep end.

Do I need any experience?

Not at all. Most people who start BJJ have zero martial arts experience. Our classes are designed for beginners to learn safely and build skills progressively.

How much does it cost?
